NMT Media Foundation Celebrates Women Journalists on International Women’s Day

The NMT Media Foundation has released a statement marking International Women’s Day 2026, highlighting the vital role women journalists play in strengthening public interest journalism and democratic accountability in Namibia.
The Foundation notes that women journalists report on issues such as gender based violence, governance, elections, economic hardship, education, and access to justice, bringing community experiences into the public sphere and helping citizens make informed decisions.
The statement also recognises the broader social context in which women live and work. While Namibian women continue to contribute across all sectors of society, many still face persistent challenges, including gender based violence and social and economic inequalities that shape access to justice, health, and opportunity. Women journalists often encounter additional pressures linked to their profession, including harassment, intimidation, and online abuse aimed at silencing reporting in the public interest.
The Foundation emphasises that protecting women journalists serves the interests of society as a whole. When women’s voices face intimidation or exclusion, the public loses perspectives and scrutiny that strengthen democracy. The NMT Media Foundation therefore calls on institutions, media organisations, and leaders across society to support safe working environments for journalists and promote equal participation in public life.
