WORLD RADIO DAY 2026: Radio and AI: Technology Must Serve People

2026-02-13

The NMT Media Foundation marks World Radio Day by celebrating radio as one of Namibia’s most trusted public platforms. In a country where radio reaches more than 80 percent of rural households, according to the 2023 Media Landscape Survey, it remains central to news, education and civic debate.

As Artificial Intelligence becomes part of newsroom workflows, we must keep a clear principle in mind. Technology must serve people. People must lead machines.

AI tools are entering broadcasting through automated scripts, voice cloning and content generation. These systems promise efficiency. They do not replace editorial judgment, local knowledge or accountability. In Namibia, this challenge is sharper. Many AI systems struggle with local languages and cultural context. Poor translation and synthetic voices risk distorting meaning and weakening public trust.

Radio’s credibility rests on authenticity. Listeners trust familiar voices. They trust presenters who understand their communities. If AI systems are used without transparency and human oversight, they risk spreading misinformation and eroding the public’s confidence in the medium.

We are also concerned about digital abuse linked to AI. Women broadcasters face growing threats, including deepfake images and voice manipulation used to discredit and silence them. This undermines media freedom and gender equality.

On this World Radio Day, we call for:
- Radio stations to use AI responsibly, with clear human oversight and editorial accountability;
- Policymakers to strengthen safeguards against content theft, deepfakes and misuse of broadcasters’ voices and likeness;
- Technology companies to develop tools that respect Namibia’s linguistic diversity and protect against disinformation.

Radio works because it is human. It reflects lived experience. It builds trust through real connection. AI can support this work, but it must not replace the voices that sustain our democracy.
