Mourning the passing of Namibia's Founding Father, Dr. Sam Nujoma

2025-02-09

It is with profound sadness that the NMT Media Foundation acknowledges the passing of Dr. Samuel Shafiishuna Nujoma, the Founding Father of Namibia. His death marks the loss of a figure whose impact on our nation is immeasurable - both in the struggle for independence and in the formation of our democratic institutions.

As a revolutionary and anti-apartheid activist, Dr. Nujoma’s leadership in our liberation struggle was pivotal. His vision for a free, independent Namibia, where the right to self-determination and freedom of expression would thrive, guided us to the political independence we celebrate today.

However, Nujoma’s legacy, like that of many great leaders, is marked by complexities. His decision to ban government advertising in The Namibian newspaper in the 1990s represents a painful chapter in the history of media freedom in our country. This action serves as a reminder of the fragility of freedoms we now cherish and the ongoing struggle to preserve those rights.

The NMT Media Foundation recognises both the challenging aspects and immense contributions of Dr. Nujoma’s leadership. His role in securing Namibia’s independence and establishing our democracy cannot be overlooked, and we remain grateful for the sacrifices made by him and many others during the liberation struggle.

As we mourn his passing, we are reminded that the legacy of any leader is complex. Dr. Nujoma’s impact on Namibia underscores the importance of protecting democracy, freedom of expression, and human rights. The struggles for media freedom and accountability that we continue today are a direct continuation of his vision, informed by the lessons of our shared history.

Our deepest condolences go to his family, loved ones, and all Namibians.

The NMT Media Foundation will forever honour his contributions while working to uphold the freedoms for which he fought.

May his soul rest in peace.
