#YouthQuakeNam24 a resounding success in empowering Namibia’s future leaders

2024-08-13

The #YouthQuakeNam24 conference, held on August 12, 2024, at the Goethe-Institut in Windhoek, brought together over 100 young Namibians, policymakers, and civil society representatives for a day dedicated to youth empowerment and democratic participation.

Organised by the Namibia Media Trust (NMT) to mark International Youth Day, the event centered on the theme “Next Generation Democracy: Inspiring Youth to Lead and Innovate.”

A DAY OF ENGAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP

The conference featured a mix of plenary sessions, panel discussions, and interactive workshops designed to equip Namibia’s youth with the tools and knowledge to actively participate in their communities and the nation’s political landscape. Topics included leadership development, advocacy strategies, and the role of innovation in civic engagement.

A highlight of the day was the debate competition between the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) and the University of Namibia (Unam). The teams debated the effectiveness of social media in youth advocacy, presenting compelling arguments that captivated the audience and judges. The Unam team emerged victorious, showcasing their strong case and debating skills.

YOUTH AT THE FOREFRONT OF CHANGE

In her welcoming remarks, NMT Director Zoé Titus emphasised the importance of youth engagement in the democratic process, particularly as Namibia approaches a critical election period. Titus pointed out that young people make up a significant portion of Namibia’s population, making their involvement in politics and governance essential.

"The YouthQuake conference is designed to be a safe space where young people can openly express their concerns," Titus said. "One of the key issues raised is the perception that democratic processes, like elections, often fail to bring about meaningful change in their lives."

Titus also encouraged participants to take the insights gained during the conference back to their communities. "Even if you’ve missed the registration deadline and can’t vote this year, there will be another opportunity. I hope that today’s discussions will inspire you to get involved in your community and public life, so that by the next election, you’ll feel confident in casting an informed vote," she added.

COLLABORATION AND NETWORKING

The conference also provided valuable networking opportunities, allowing participants to connect with peers, mentors, and key figures in government and civil society. The atmosphere was charged with energy and enthusiasm as young leaders exchanged ideas, discussed challenges, and explored solutions to the issues facing their communities.

Attendees praised the event for its impact, expressing gratitude for the chance to engage in meaningful discussions and learn from experts in various fields. The collaborative spirit that defined #YouthQuakeNam24 was evident throughout the day, reinforcing the importance of youth-led initiatives in shaping Namibia’s future.

A CALL TO ACTION

As #YouthQuakeNam24 concluded, delegates issued an official “Call to Action,” urging greater youth participation in democratic processes and advocating for policies that support young leaders. This powerful conclusion to the conference underscored the critical role of youth in driving positive change and set the stage for ongoing advocacy and innovation.
